You Think I'm Racist?
What's up everyone? Hope you all are doing well today and enjoying this holiday weekend. Over the past few months, I've become a bit more vocal about race issues here in America, as it relates to blacks and the injustice that is often experienced by my people. Today, while debating about the Michael Brown situation in Ferguson, Missouri, a fellow accused me of being racist and said that I'm apart of the problem, simply because I used the words, "my people." I couldn't believe it, and actually found it funny after I read the comment. I think there's a huge misconception about me and other people like me who are discussing these issues, and some people don't truly understand our stance.
I believe the misconception here is that we as black people, can't be all about preaching power to our people, uplifting our people, awakening our people, and fighting for equality for our people, without also not hating white people. It sounds ridiculous, but I believe that's what the issue is. People automatically think that when they see us discussing these things, or being angry about these things, that it means that we hate white people and think all white people are the devil. Couldn't be further from the truth. I actually had another buddy who messaged me, and said that he was beginning to think that I didn't like white people either. I'm shocked! Me? Of all people? Me? Racist against white people? I don't get it.
I was born into the military at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. I've lived all around this country that we live in due to my father's military service, and now from my own. I grew up on Fort Knox, Kentucky, and throughout Hardin County, Kentucky. All throughout my life, I've always lived in areas where there are mixed races of people. Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Hawaiian, Eskimos, all kinds of people. I was never raised to treat people any different based on their skin color. Some of my best friends throughout my lifetime are white. But the clincher to me, and why I'm shocked anybody would ever question me being racist, is that I'm married to a WHITE WOMAN! I've been married to my white wife for 7 years, and we have 3 interracial daughters together. I've been accused of not liking Black women before, and that's more common for me, even though I can't stand that either. But to be accused of being racist and hating white people? Blasphemous!
I realize that not all white people are racist, Black people hating, individuals. I know that while some are shooting to kill us, and the media seems to portray us as thugs and criminals all the time despite who we really are, I realize that not everyone hates us. I believe that the friends I have who are white, some of which are the closest guys I've ever known, don't truly hate me or my people. I get that. But, I also get that they've also probably never seen racial injustice first hand, or have never been racially profiled, or been mistreated by police based on their skin color, so they probably don't understand the outrage when to see it being done to an individual who looks like them.
My posting the debates, and comments, and questions that I post throughout social media aren't me taking shots at white people. Never have I ever said that I hate white people, or that I feel any kind of way about white people. I've been extremely cautious to make sure I didn't come across that way, because I didn't want to offend my family that is on the other side there. However, these posts are about me believing in my people, and believing that our lives matter, and that we should be treated just as equally as white people, which we are not. I believe that unless you've been through it, you'll never understand how we feel about these issues that are plaguing our nation. There is some serious racial injustice going on, and my posts are to help raise awareness to my people and make them more aware of their surroundings and what's going on in this country, as it relates to us.
Now, that's not to say that I don't support white people, or anyone else, too. Injustice is injustice, and I've always said that as well. I have a few white friends that bring up the white teenager, Dillon Taylor being killed by a black cop and nobody caring. As messed up as it sounds, my belief about this is, it wasn't made a big deal because white people didn't make it a big deal. White people are typically a more calm group of people, and they don't typically have any issues with justice being served, or that the justice that was served, was the right form of justice. This is why there were no protests, and no big deal made about Dillon Taylor. If white people got angry about it, got the media behind it, protested and all of that, then that black cop would have been indicted, or at least had more coverage on it. Simple. It sounds horrible, and I don't mean to make it sound bad at all, but that is my belief as to why there's no coverage on Dillon Taylor.
Anyway, that's all I've got to say about this, and I hope this clears the air some. I am not a racist, and I don't see how anything I say, or anything about me, would lead you to believe that I hate white people. That just doesn't make sense to me. Hold judgement when reading these posts, and check for facts, I'm not speaking to get under your skin or to badmouth those who are white. Read a little further into it, and try to understand the points being made. As always, thanks for reading, and I'll talk to you all on the next one. Peace.
