Any Man Wanna Make a Good R&B Album?
When was the last time you turned on a R&B album created by a male, and it felt like a classic album to you? I was just sitting here listening to N.E Heartbreak, and, "You're Not My Kind of Girl," comes on, and it sent me to a place of musical happiness that can't quite be matched by today's R&B. I felt like I was Ralph Tresvant. I felt like I could sing and hit the high notes. I felt like I could dance. I felt like I was in the studio with them as the song was recorded. It's just an awesome feeling when you listen to great music. Do men even care to do that these days, or do they just want to sing about getting the cutty, and be done with it? Is there anybody out there that can evoke some emotional feelings through their music, and make you want to wine and dine your lady, or go home crying and apologize for things that you didn't even do?
I'm purposely calling out the men here, because I believe that for the most part, the ladies are still making this kind of music. For example, just last year, Solange released her album, "A Seat at the Table," and it brought out all kinds of emotions from men and women alike. I FELT her. I felt every piece of what she was talking about throughout that album. The inflection of her voice, the pain, the happiness, everything she felt on that album, I felt it. It was easily one of my favorite albums of the year, and I can still turn it on and jam it from front to back today. Her big sister, Beyonce, also delivered quite an incredible album with, "Lemonade," as did Rihanna with, "Anti." All top quality albums than got constant play in my stereo.
But men, where are those albums for us? Am I just missing them? I tried to listen to Tank's latest album, "Savage," and it did nothing for me. I'm currently listening to the latest Musiq Soulchild album, and while it is jammin four songs in, I'm not getting the emotional connection through this project. What happened to straight R&B albums, with just singing and very minimal, if any rapping? Must we have rapping on every R&B album? John Legend and Ne-yo are two of my favorite singers, and both of their latest albums just didn't hit mark for me. Men, we haven't been making good R&B music for at least a decade. Where are the songs like, "Where Did my Baby Go?" Or, "Ice Box," or even, " Single?" Where are those songs?
Another problem I think we have, men, is that we're not sneaky about wanting to have sex anymore. It's just straight out there in the open! Remember when we were discreet about it? "Too Close," by Next was about a man having a boner from a woman dancing too close to him and ultimately, him wanting to smash. I never knew that as a kid! We sang that song as kids because it wasn't a straight up sexually explicit song. Where are those types of songs today? Why must we tell the ladies from the beginning, "Hey, I'm trying to f**k?" Why? Can't we work our way up to that anymore? Where's the build up to humping? Can I get some four play music before I get busy? No?
I challenge all R&B singers out there to do better. And you know, before I forget... Where is Omarion?!!!! There is a whole lane out there for him to be taking, and he's nowhere to be found! Omarion, come back, get some dope beats, R&B BEATS, not hip hop beats, leave the Rick Ross guest appearances alone, and make an amazing Maybach Music R&B album! Tyrese, stop trying to rap and get your "Sweet Lady," on. Nobody wants to hear you rap. Nobody... Not even you. You really don't want to hear yourself rap either. Be honest.
What do you all think? Am I wrong here? Share your thoughts in the comments. Thanks for reading, and I'll holler at you all in the next one. Peace.

Completely agree! The New Edition story should serve as the blueprint for all male r&b right now. Strike while the iron is hot.
ReplyDeleteI can agree with that. It's just like, there's no soul in the R&B these days. We gotta get back to that.
