#TeamPixel or Bust?
Next week, a few new Google devices will arrive at my home for personal use. I have been a Google/Android loyalist since the very first Android device, the G1. I'm a fan of Google phones, I'm a fan of of previous Google Tablets (the smaller tablets like the Nexus 7 and Nexus 9. Didn't buy the Pixel C tablet.) I am also a Chromebook user, and coincidentally, my daughter's have recently broken one of my old Chromebooks, which is now hanging on by a thread to be charged. So I'm giving them my current Chromebook, and upgrading to the Pixelbook. Along with the Pixelbook, the Pixel 2 XL should be arriving as well, despite all the negative coverage that phone has been receiving. With everything I've said above, for me, Google is either about to be a Google Watch away from permanently keeping me #TeamPixel or two mistakes from leading me elsewhere. Let me explain.
Since 2008, as it relates to tech, Google has given me everything that I've needed. I love the Android operating system the best. I've tried others (Windows Phone was close to having my interest, but they didn't have Google apps.) I'm a fan of their Nexus/Pixel devices. I love Chrome OS, I like Chromebooks, I love Chromecast, I use a Nexus Player every day, I have a Google home now, just everything that Google does, I dig it. I use Google Play Music every single day, it's a must have app for me that does not working properly on any other OS. I use Google books, Google Play Movies, Google Maps, Google Keep, basically, if Google makes it? I use it and I like it.... For the most part. The Nexus 9 is probably the one Google devices that I didn't really like that I owned. It was only decent. But everything else has been good. I use a Mac Mini for editing videos on YouTube, but for everything else, it's Android and Chrome in my house. Sure, I've tried other devices from Samsung, LG, HTC, even tried a Windows phone and an iPhone each for a total of 3½ days. But I always go back to Team Google.
Lately, Google hasn't been getting the best of press for their devices. Their Pixel 2 XL has been demolished by tech reviewers for screen issues and even recently in some cases, shipping without Android on some devices. However, I still like the device and I ordered it because not everyone has had those negative issues. So I'm taking a chance. The same goes for the Pixelbook laptop. I currently have two Chromebooks in my house. One that I use, one that my kids use. However, my daughter's Chromebook is broken (Kids break everything!!!) And has to be held a certain way to charge it. So I'm going to have to eventually give them my current HP Chromebook 13 G1.
I'm excited about having the Pixelbook, as I've always said that if I could get a Chromebook Pixel, I would, but never did back in the day because I felt they were out of my price range. All of that is out the window with the Pixelbook. It was the device that I was most excited about from the Google event last month. I can't wait to get it in and further type these blogs on it.
With that being said, the only thing that I feel Google is currently missing, is a watch. The Apple watch is a very nice looking watch and does everything you'd want in a smartwatch. Google does have Android Wear, and I've had a few Android Wear smartwatches that were good. But Android Wear is not seen in the same light as the Apple watch. In order to complete the ecosystem, I feel like Google needs to release their own true Pixel Watch. This is the next step. Make it in house, just like they make their phones, computers, and tablets. Possibly get support to have Fitbit access or something that makes the fitness side of it great, and release a great Android alternative to the Apple watch. This is all that I believe is missing from Google's catalogue. But....
If next week when I receive the new Google Pixel devices, if for some crazy reason I don't love these devices, then it may be time for me to look elsewhere. Whether the reason I don't like the devices is due to flaws or something just not clicking with me, it may be time for me to consider Team Galaxy for good, or maybe even..... Team Apple? Perhaps? Nah. I can't even consider such a thing.
This coming Monday, should be Pixel Day for me, so we shall see what the future in tech holds for me.
